Meet Kosta Kulundzic - Extraordinary Artist
Kosta Kulundzic is a French artist of Serbian ancestry, born in Paris in 1972. He currently lives in Honolulu where he is an adjunct art professor at the University of Hawaii and a drawing and painting professor at the School of Architecture of Paris Val de Seine. He has shown in Paris, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Brussels, Honolulu, and at the SZ Gallery on Mercer Island in 2016, where he performed both a live painting and drawing - lucky us!

1) What is Tropic Iconic about?
Tropic Iconic is a reflection on the mysticism that permeates Hawaii, Its nature and its inhabitants. The works are portraits of the youth of Hawaii’s North-Shore, through which I try to express all the grace and sweet mysticism that seems to emerge from them… almost in the way of icons. Reem Bassous Inspired by the Persian fable of the simurgh – a mythical bird of enormous strength and wisdom – Bassous comments on the unique qualities of the Mughal Gallery in her artwork. Originally constructed as Doris Duke’s bedroom, this ornate space is ringed by “nets” of carved marble jali (screens), at once both luxurious and fearful, beautiful yet caged. Pushing back against this feeling of captivity is the tale of the simurgh: a collective of birds on a spiritual quest to find the creature realize that it is themselves (si murgh = thirty birds in Persian) who possess the power and strength of the simurgh – and that wisdom and fortitude were inside them all along. Bassous has depicted thirty unique birds in her artwork, creating in the abstracted pulses of the paint both the strength of the individual and the power of the collective.
