I’ve been asked to introduce the bishop Sunday evening, but as I write this Tuesday morning I have no idea what I am going to say.
I do know, however, what I am not going to say.
I’m not going to say all the things I want to say about my friend Martin Sowa.
The occasion will be the annual “smoker” sponsored by the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph Marello parish. A couple of hundred men will attend the event designed to bring them together for food and fellowship during the Easter season.
It’s the perfect setting for me to tell the story of Martin, a fellow parishioner whose path to God has inspired me for more than 50 years and I know will inspire them. But I can’t do that. I can’t do it for two reasons.
One, I am just the toastmaster, not the principal speaker. That honor and distinction goes to Bishop Bambera. The stage belongs to him.
And two, Martin, himself, told me not to.
Not in so many words, mind you. What he said was, “Hey, I hear you are the toastmaster for the smoker. I have one piece of advice: Keep the program short.”
I know what he meant. These things can be painstakingly long and it’s up to the toastmaster to make sure they are not.

St. Joseph Freinademetz (also known as St. Joseph Mary Freinademetz) was a Catholic priest and missionary who is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. He was born in 1852 in the Kingdom of Italy and he is remembered for his tireless efforts to spread the gospel and to serve the poor and disadvantaged.
Freinademetz was ordained a priest in 1875 and he immediately felt called to serve as a missionary in China. He arrived in China in 1879 and spent the next 45 years working to spread the gospel and to serve the Chinese people.
Freinademetz faced many challenges during his time in China, including persecution and hostility from the authorities. He persevered in his work, however, and became known for his tireless efforts to bring the message of the gospel to the Chinese people.
Freinademetz is remembered for his great devotion to God and for his selfless service to others. St. Joseph Freinademetz is the patron saint of China. The feast day of St. Joseph Freinademetz is celebrated on January 31st by the Catholic Church.
