PLOT:

At 16, Alex Chivescu searched for parents who would rescue him from a state home and allow him to fulfill his dream of attending an Ivy League university.
The Hallmark Channel tells the Harvard University junior’s story in the original film “Finding A Family,” tonight at 8.
The Michigan-raised economics major gained national attention several years ago when he staged a letter- writing campaign to find foster parents.
Chivescu wasn’t a stranger to the system. Following a severe car accident, his mother (played by “Army Wives” star Kim Delaney) developed bipolar disorder, and he was placed in and out of foster homes throughout his childhood and teen years.
“My mom will always be my mom,” Chivescu, 20, told the Herald. “I think the problem with mental illness is that it is not super easily clear-cut. There are people who are not able to function in life, and varying different degrees.”
After Chivescu legally terminated his mom’s custody rights, he set out to find a foster family who could keep him close to the only real home he’d ever known — school.
While living at the Children’s Home of Detroit, Chivescu wrote letters to families in his school district, hoping someone would take him
